Change to Indirect Speech



1. Rajan said, â€Å"I saw the procession†.
Rajan said that he had seen the procession.

2. The old man said to the little boy, â€Å"What is your name, my child?â€Â
The old man inquired of the little boy what his name was.

3. She said, â€Å"I have never seen him.â€Â
She denied that she had never seen him.

4. She said to him, â€Å"Please don't abandon me!â€Â
She entreated him not to abandon her.

5. The Judge said to the police officer, â€Å"Bring in the accused.â€Â
The Judge commanded the police officer to bring in the accused.

6. The officer said to his men, â€Å"Fire.â€Â
The officer commanded his men to fire.

7. He said to the boy, â€Å"What is your name?â€Â
He asked the boy what his name was.

8. He said to me, â€Å"Please help me!â€Â
He requested me to help him.

9. He exclaimed, â€Å"My goodness! How beautiful she is!â€Â
Full of wonder and admiration, he exclaimed how beautiful she was.

10. The officer said to the candidate, â€Å"How old are you†?
The officer asked the candidate how old he was.

11. They said to the conservative candidate, â€Å"What are your views on socialism?â€Â
They questioned the conservative candidate on his views on socialism.

12. She said to him indignantly, â€Å"Am I your servant?â€Â
She asked him indignantly whether she was his servant.

13. She said to me, â€Å"You are my only friend†.
She told me that I was her only friend.

14. The teacher said to the student, â€Å"Stand up, and remain standing for ten minutes.â€Â
The teacher told th student to stand up, and to remain standing for ten minutes.

15. The principal said to the students, â€Å"Your examinations will commence on Monday†.
The Principal informed the students that their examinations would commence on Monday.

16. I said to him, â€Å"When did you arrive?â€Â
I asked him when he had arrived.

17. He said to his servant, â€Å"Fetch my hat.â€Â
He ordered his servant to fetch his hat.

18. Venu said, â€Å"I want chocolates nowâ€Â
Venu said that he wanted chocolates then.

19. He said to the stranger, â€Å"Where do you come from?â€Â
He asked the stranger where he came from.

20. He said to me, â€Å"Did you go to college last Monday?â€Â
He asked me whether I had gone to college the previous Monday.

21. The teacher said to the boy, â€Å"Why were you absent yesterday?â€Â
The teacher asked the boy why he had been absent the previous day.

22. He said, â€Å"I have never seen her in my life†.
He denied that he had ever seen her in his life.

23. He said to the policeman, â€Å"Please don't beat me!â€Â
He begged the policeman not to beat him.

24. He said, â€Å"I have many friends†.
He said that he had many friends.

25. Vijay said, â€Å"I have finished my work†.
Vijay said that he had finished his work.

26. The dictator said, â€Å"Let him be shot.â€Â
The dictator ordered him to be shot.

27. She said, â€Å"Can his words be believed?
She queried whether his words could be believed.

28. The spokesman said, â€Å"The party is facing no new problem†.
The spokesman stated that the party was facing no new problem.

29. The young man said, â€Å"My goodness! How beautiful she is!â€Â
The young man exclaimed with wonder and admiration how beautiful she was.

30. He said to her, â€Å"Where are you going?â€Â
He asked her where she was going.

31. I said to him, â€Å"Have you been drinking?â€Â
I asked him whether he had been drinking.

32. I said to him, â€Å"Kindly meet me tomorrow.â€Â
I requested him to meet me the next day.

33. He cried, â€Å"O God, have mercy on me!â€Â
He prayed God to have mercy on him.

34. The teacher said to the students, â€Å"Learn this poem by heart.â€Â
The teacher instructed the students to learn the poem by heart.

35. Raj said, â€Å"I am going to Bangalore tomorrow.â€Â
Raj said that he was going to Bangalore the next day.

36. He said to me, â€Å"Please help me!â€Â
He begged me to help him.

37. They said to him, â€Å"Are you writing a novel?â€Â
They asked him whether he was writing a novel.

38. He said, â€Å"I am innocent, whatever people may sayâ€Â
He claimed that he was innocent, whatever people might say.

39. He said to the boy, â€Å"Don't leave the house†.
He ordered the boy not to leave the house.

40. Arun said, â€Å"The audience has been waiting for the minister's arrival†.
Arun said that the audience had been waiting for the minister's arrival.

41. The teacher asked his students, â€Å"Have you ever seen a kangaroo?â€Â
The teacher asked his students whether they had ever seen a kangaroo.

42. Mr. Ajay: â€Å"My friend, please don't betray your countryâ€Â
Mr. Ajay pleaded with his friend not to betray his country.

43. Calling a man aside, the policeman inquired, â€Å"What is all this uproar about?â€Â
Calling a man aside, the policeman inquired what all the uproar was about.

44. The Judge said, â€Å"Let the accused be released forthwith.â€Â
The Judge directed that the accused be released forthwith.

45. The innkeeper said to the stranger, â€Å"Who are you?â€Â
The innkeeper asked the stranger who he was.

46. The old man exclaimed, â€Å"Alas! My country is in ruins!â€Â
The old man exclaimed bitterly that his country was in ruins.

47. He said to me, â€Å"Which is your book?â€Â
He asked me which my book was.

48. John says, â€Å"I can manage this problem.â€Â
John says that he can manage that problem.

49. He said to me, â€Å"What is your name, and where do you live?â€Â
He wanted to know what my name and address and where I lived.

50. He said, â€Å"I wish to learn English†.
He said that he wished to learn English
